A fascinating history makes this 1977 911 Turbo irresistible. Dr. Andrew R. James, then a young orthopedic surgeon, was the first owner. Busy making a name for himself fixing Bo Jackson’s hips and Roger Clemen’s shoulder, he was unfortunately much too busy to drive his Carrera Turbo. Dr. James had racked up only 6,335 miles when he sold it in 1987.
A lost title created lots of paper work for the new owner, a fellow orthopedic doctor in Atlanta, Georgia. He owned this little gem for over ten years, before passing it onto Mark Dondereo in 1997 with only 15,000 total miles on the clock. Mark owned the car a little over ten years before we purchased it with only 41,000 miles.
This non-intercooled turbo is truly a diamond in the rough. We flew to Atlanta to drive her home and that was one memorable trip. It is amazing what a little six hour drive can teach you about a car. For one thing, it taught me that you never drive a car with 30 year old tires, soft brakes and a leaking exhaust for six hours across three states in the pouring rain!
The next morning, hat in hand, I took my rare low-mileage Turbo to the shop and asked our mechanics to check it over and tell me what was needed. The list came back as long as my arm: the turbo was shot, there were no service records and the brakes needed a total rebuild, along with the rotors and soft lines. Well, sometimes you just swallow your pride and let the mechanics do their job. They started by removing the engine and replacing the turbo. While the engine was out it was resealed and completely serviced, with a new clutch installed for good measure. The brake calipers were rebuilt, rotors replaced, master cylinder and brake lines replaced.
Once the car was mechanically sound we turned our attention to the exterior. The car was still wearing its original Grand Prix White paint with a few small flaws. The inside of the deck lid needed attention from the effects of heat and a golf ball sized ding in the door needed repair. The entire chassis was then scrubbed and we worked our way around. The paint was rubbed and loved to the condition you see in the pictures (exceptional). The interior is just as you would expect a 41,000 mile car to look, that is – great!
1977 was the last year of the original non-intercooled Carrera Turbo’s and Porsche brought only 727 to the US. This is undoubtedly one of the finest left today. After our labors it now needs nothing. This Turbo came out so nice that it was chosen to represent the non-intercooled 911 Turbos in the historical display at the 2008 Porsche Parade.
